# English exams

The most common English exams are IELTS and TOEFL for university and migration abroad, PTE Academic as an alternative to both, and TOEIC for work. This page compares who each exam is for, its sections and its score scale, and takes you to each exam’s word list and mock test.

## How to prepare

1. ### Build the vocabulary

Start with the exam’s own word list. Most points lost in reading and listening come from unknown words.
2. ### Measure with a mock

Take a timed mock and see which section or question type is holding you back.
3. ### Speak every day

Speaking and Writing improve with practice. Have short daily conversations with AI tutors.

### Which English exam should I take?

It depends on your goal: IELTS or TOEFL for university abroad, usually IELTS for migration, TOEIC for work. The definitive answer is the list of exams the institution you apply to accepts.

### IELTS or TOEFL?

Most universities accept both. IELTS is more common in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, TOEFL in the US. Migration programs mostly ask for IELTS. Check the institution’s own page.

### What are the word lists based on?

Openly licensed lists compiled by researchers: the TOEIC Service List for TOEIC and the New Academic Word List for academic exams (TOEFL, IELTS). Each list page names its source.

### Are the mock tests official?

No. Our mock tests follow each exam’s public format. VocaFlare is not affiliated with ETS, Pearson, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge; scores are estimates.
