IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English proficiency test run jointly by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge. It has four sections: Listening (about 30 minutes, 40 questions), Reading (60 minutes, 40 questions), Writing (60 minutes, two tasks) and Speaking (11 to 14 minutes, face to face with an examiner). Results are given in half bands from 0 to 9. Academic is required for university applications abroad, General Training for migration and work. An English proficiency test run jointly by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge. Universities, employers and immigration authorities accept it, above all in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It has Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections and the result is a band from 0 to 9. ### What band do I need? It depends on where you apply. Universities usually ask for an overall band between 6.0 and 7.0 plus a minimum in each section. Check the exact requirement on the institution’s own page; a mock test shows which section is holding you back. ### Is this the official IELTS test? No. These are IELTS-style practice tests built on the public IELTS format and band descriptors.
